Cambodia

We arrived in Cambodia about 10am and visited a craft centre where young people were trained in traditional crafts like stone carving, lacquer work etc. Then we visited a local Market and had lunch before checking into the hotel. Unfortunately we didn’t manage the afternoon tea in the hotel but went for a healthy swim in the hotel pool instead.

Angkor Wat – Cambodia
Today was the highlight day of the time in Cambodia in which we visited some of the temples of the Angkor complex in closing Angkor Wat. The area this covers is over 200 square miles so we could only see a small bit of it, but it is all stunningly impressive with a lot of surviving detail. Very hot walking around so another swim at the hotel to cool down before a visit to a local restaurant for a barbecue meal (which included crocodile meat) and a colourful display of traditional dancing.
Final Days Of The Tour
Yesterday morning started with a drive through the countywide to see another of the main temples, this one built of lovely red sandstone and again with kitschy fine carvings. On the return trip we stopped to see the production of palm sugar in one of the local villages. The houses are largely wooden and are raised up on stilts to prevent destruction by termites. After lunch was the final temple of the trip which was the one used in the “tomb raider” movie and was different because although partly restored had been left as it had been found with the roots of trees engulfing the buildings. After this we went for a cruise on the largest lake in the area ( during the rainy season the largest in the whole of Asia) to see the fishermen and their families who live in floating houses on the lake. We also visited a crocodile farm while there.
Today we finally had the chance to lie in and then visited the main museum to see some more of the Angkor sculptures. Found a nice veggie friendly restaurant for lunch with a lovely garden full of butterflies. In the last 18 days we have visited three countries, in the next 24 hours we will spend 3 more as we leave for the airport for the flight home at 7.30am tomorrow.
